Men's Basketball Defeats Wagner

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. – The Merrimack College men's basketball team beat Wagner College on Saturday afternoon 58-48 for its first Northeast Conference victory of the season. Jordan Minor earned his fifth double-double of the season after scoring 16 points and pulling down 10 rebounds. The Kingston native also went a career-high 11-12 from the line. Ziggy Reid was the only other Warrior in double figures with 13 points. Reid went a perfect 2-2 from deep. Jordan McKoy had a season-high nine points.

Rapid Recap
  • The Seahawks opened the game by scoring six straight points causing Merrimack to call a timeout. McKoy then went on a six-point run by himself to tie the game. Javon Bennett, Devon Savage and Reid all had threes to put Merrimack up by nine. A Mykel Derring three with nine and a half minutes to go put the Warriors up nine. Wagner added three points to cut it down to six. The Warriors then scored five straight to go up 12. Both teams went back and forth. Minor scored on a layup with five seconds to play, sending Merrimack up 12 heading into halftime.
  • Both teams battled for the first five minutes of the second half. The Seahawks cut the lead to seven with 11 minutes to play. Nick Filchner hit a three after some good ball movement putting Merrimack up by 10. Merrimack then hit five free throws in a row to go up 15. With three minutes to play a jumper by Wagner cut the advantage down to 10. Minor hit two free throws to send it back up to 12. Good free throw shooting by the Warriors down the stretch gave them the 10 point win.
Notes and Numbers
  • The Warriors forced 14 turnovers and scored 11 points off of the turnovers.
  • Merrimack shot a season-high 42 free throws. Jordan Derkack went a perfect 6-6 from the charity stripe.
  • The Warriors shot 50% from long range.
