Baseball Ties Marshall due to Darkness and Weather

HUNTINGTON, WV – After a seven run ninth inning the Merrimack College baseball team had their second game against Marshall University go down as a tie after it got called due to darkness on Friday night and then called due to weather in the Huntington area on Sunday. The Warriors saw a number of players have a multi-hit game. Alex Haba continued his hitting streak after getting two. Jake Macchi ripped two balls up the middle and earned an RBI.

Rapid Recap
  • Marshall started off the game with a run in the first inning after a double to left found the ground. In the second the Warriors got a runner on first, but could not get him home. In the second, the Herd added two more runs to take a three-run lead. Haba ripped a single in the third and then stole second. Braydon Dolbashian then reached on a throwing error to put runners on first and third. Michael Golankiewicz then walked to load the bases. Bryant Skurbe then grounded out to end then inning. Marshall tacked on two in the third to take a five-run advantage. The Warriors were again held scoreless in the fourth. Three more runs were added to the Herd total in the fourth to give them eight runs on the night.
  • The momentum started to turn for the Warriors in the seventh. Ben Nelson started the inning off with a single, followed by a Crowley single on the next at bat, putting runners on first and second with no outs. Christian Gemelli then launched on to right to put the Warriors on the board. Peyton Heisner struck out the side in the bottom half of the seventh to add to the Merrimack momentum. In the eighth Skurbe got hit by a pitch with one out. Tiernan Lynch then singled through the right side for his first hit of the season, putting runners on first and second. Pinch hitter Stephan Santarpia then singled to left field to put another run on the board for the Warriors. Brayden Howrigan got the Herd to go down in order in the eighth.
  • In the top of the ninth, Gemelli led off with a single. Haba followed up with a single of his own to put two runners on. Dolbashian singled in the next at bat and scored Gemelli. Skurbe walked with one out, loading the bases. Lynch got his second hit of the game on a single to the right side of the field, scoring Haba from third. Macchi then singled in the next at bat to pull the Warriors within three. Crowley was then hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to bring Merrimack back to down two. Kurtis Stadnicki doubled, clearing the bases to put Merrimack up by one. In the bottom half of the ninth, Marshall added a run, tying the game.
 
Top Performers // Notes
  • Haba makes it 10th straight game with a hit. He leads the squad with a .481 batting average.
  • The tie against Marshall is the first time in program history since the 1998 season.

The Warriors will face Northeastern University on Wednesday afternoon. Game time is set for 3 p.m.
