Baseball Stumbles in Sunday Doubleheader in New York

 HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. – The Merrimack College baseball team was beaten twice on Sunday afternoon in the state of New York. The squad lost its first game to Hofstra University by a score of 14-5, followed by a 10-0 loss to Manhattan College, 10-0. Michael Golankiewicz was a bright spot for the Warriors after he hit a three-run homerun in game one and had two hits in game two.

Rapid Recap (G1)
  • The Pride stuck first in the bottom of the first with two runs, giving them an early advantage. In the second, Hofstra jumped out to a five-run lead after a three run second. The Pride made the advantage nine after a four run third. Hofstra added one more in the fourth to make the lead double figures. The Pride added two in the bottom half of the fifth. In the sixth, Jake Macchi singled to lead off the inning, but was thrown out trying to stretch it to a double. Scott Elliott then followed the single with a double of his own, putting the first runner in scoring position for Merrimack. Ben Nelson was then hit by a pitch to put runners on first and second with one out. Golankiewicz stepped up to the plate and hit his second homerun of the weekend to right field, clearing the bases and scoring three runs, cutting the lead to seven. Hofstra added one in the sixth, making the advantage eight.
  • Steven Santarpia drew a walk to lead off the seventh inning. Thomas Crowley then singled to right, advancing Santarpia to third. Macchi then walked to load the bases for the Warriors. With two outs in the inning, Anthony Gentile drew a walk, which scored a runner from third. Merrimack now had four runs. Hofstra scored a run in the seventh to make the lead 10. In the eighth, Santarpia singled to left with two outs. Crowley and Tiernan Lynch drew walks to load the bases once again. The Warriors then took advantage of a wild pitch, scoring a run.
Rapid Recap (G2)
  • The Jaspers scored first in the first inning with a two-run single found its way to left field. Golankiewicz singled to lead off the inning, but was thrown out at second during the next at bat. Alex Haba then singled past the third basemen but did could not leave first base. Merrimack starter Cedric Gillette walked one batter in the second, but got out of the inning without letting up a run. Manhattan added eight runs in the bottom half of the third to go up 10. In the bottom half of the sixth, Golankiewicz singled to the right side with two outs in the inning, but did not leave first base. Jack Collins let up a two out single in the bottom half of the seventh, but got out of the inning after the third out flew out to left.

  • Damon Fuller pitched a scoreless inning and a third to close out game one.

The Warriors get back to action on Wednesday afternoon when they head down to Kingston to take on the University of Rhode Island. First pitch is set for 3 p.m.
