Baseball Takes Close Battle Against Sacred Heart Sunday

ANDOVER, MASS. – The Merrimack College baseball team took two of three in the weekend series against Sacred Heart University, winning the final game 3-2 on Sunday. Michael Golankiewicz homered in the sixth to tie the game. Two batters later Braydon Dolbashian launched a sac fly to center, scoring what ended up being the game winning run from third. On the mound Cedric Gillette earned his second victory of the season after throwing six innings, letting up four hits and two runs. Timmy Kalantzakos earned a three inning save after allowing just three hits.

  • The Pioneers struck first in the top of inning number one, getting one run. Anthony Gentile drew a walk in the top of the first, but was caught stealing to end the inning. Gillette settled in during the second, getting Sacred Heart to go down in order, striking out two in a row to end the inning. Bryant Skurbe opened the second inning with a single to center. Dolbashian then doubled down the line to put runners on second and third. Ben Nelson then tied the game with a single to center. Gillette continued to deal in the third, getting three straight ground outs to second. The Warriors starter made it nine retired batters in a row after getting three in the fourth.
  • The Pioneers added a run in the top of the sixth to take a one-run lead. The Warriors battled back. Golankiewicz led off the bottom half of the sixth with his fourth homerun of the season to tie the game at two. Skurbe then tripled down the line. Dolbashian smoked a sac fly to center, which was long enough to score Skurbe from third, giving Merrimack a one score lead. Kalantzakos subbed in for Gillette in the seventh. The Andover native let up a single in the first, but left him on base. In the seventh, Gentile drew a walk and stole second, but was left in scoring position. Kalantzakos got Sacred Heart to go down in order in the ninth to earn his second save of the season.

  • Just 18 games into the season, Golankiewicz has already surpassed his career home run total of three. He has four so far this year.
  • With his two hits today, Skurbe now has multiple hits in the last two games. He is currently on a four-game hitting streak.
