Baseball Falls Twice to Mount St. Mary’s Sunday

ANDOVER, MASS. – The Merrimack College baseball team lost twice on Sunday afternoon to Mount St. Mary's University. Game two was supposed to conclude on Saturday, but was suspended due to rain. Scott Elliott led the way for the Warriors with five hits and four RBI's during the two games. Alex Haba also had four hits in two games, including three in game two of the day. Andrew Selima had two homeruns for the Warriors, one in each contest. In game two, Merrimack starter Cedric Gillette threw seven strong inning, letting up just five hits, while striking out four.

Rapid Recap (Game 1)
  • Haba led off the bottom of the first with a single up the middle. Elliott then walked to put runners on first and second. Later in the inning Braydon Dolbashian reached on an error by the second basemen, scoring the runner from third and giving the Warriors an early lead. Bryant Skurbe doubled, but one batter later the inning ended. The Mount added two runs in the top of the second to take a lead. Elliott singled home Anthony Gentile who walked earlier in the inning, tying the game for Merrimack. Mount St. Mary's added three runs in the third to go up three. In the fourth, the Mount scored four to go up six. In the bottom half of the fourth, Selima homered to left, getting one back for the home team. After a 19 hour delay both teams got back to work on Sunday morning. In the top of the fifth, the Mount added five runs. The road team scored three more in the sixth. Selima singled in the bottom half of the sixth, but was left in scoring positon later on in the inning. Elliott and Michael Golankiewicz both had base hits to lead off the seventh. Both were left on base at the end of the inning. Mount St. Mary's added six more runs to its total, winning the game 22-3.  
Rapid Recap (Game 2)
  • Gillette got the Mount to go down in order in the top half of the first, striking out one in the process. Haba once again led off with a single, but ended up getting left a first. In the fourth, Elliott singled to lead off the inning. Golankiewicz then followed up with a single of his own, putting runners on first and second with no outs. Merrimack then failed to get either across home plate, keeping the score tied a zero. Mount St. Mary's scored two runs in the fifth on a homerun to give them a two run advantage. The Warriors got one back in the bottom half of the fifth. Ben Nelson reached on an error to start the comeback. Kurtis Stadnicki then singled, putting two runners on. Haba singled to right, loading the bases. Elliott then singled home the runner from third, cutting the Mount lead to one.
  • Selima homered for the second time of the day in the sixth, this time it was two runs that gave the Warriors the lead. Haba doubled in the seventh. Elliott then reached on an error, scoring Haba. Merrimack now lead by two. Mount St. Mary's batted back in the eighth, scoring four runs, giving them a two run advantage. In the bottom half of the eighth, Stadnicki singled with two outs. Pinch hitter Jake Macchi was hit by a pitch, putting runner on first and second. Haba was then also hit by a pitch, loading the bases. Elliott drew a free pass and a run scored, cutting the deficit to just one. Merrimack loaded the bases in the bottom of the ninth, but could not get a run across home plate.

  • Elliott has been on fire since starting conference play. The junior is hitting .412 through nine games, which is good enough for best on the team
  • With his two home runs this afternoon, Selima leads the team in home runs with five so far on the season.

The Warriors get back to action on Tuesday night when they head up to Lowell to take on the Riverhawks. First pitch is set for 6 p.m.
