NORTH ANDOVER, Mass. – Despite a strong effort in the non-conference tilt, the Merrimack softball team fell against the UConn Huskies in North Andover on Wednesday afternoon.
The Basics
Score: Merrimack 0, UConn 6 | Final
Records: Merrimack Warriors (8-23) | University of Connecticut Huskies (29-14)
Location: Martone-Mejail Field | North Andover, Mass.
Scoring Plays
- Merrimack earned a base runner in the first inning, as Jenna Wike reached on a swinging strike that wasn't held by the catcher. Freshman Ellen Hubbard made hard contact with the end of the bat but an aerial snag kept the Warriors from putting two on base.
- In the top of the second, the Huskies worked their first runs of the day. A single and a trio of walks brought in the first run before a strikeout put two away for UConn. A double to left center added two more runs to end the inning with three runs on two hits, with the bases left loaded after a strikeout. UConn added another run in the fourth after a missed play at second base on a stolen base allowed the runner to advance home.
- UConn worked to make Merrimack's comeback attempts in the seventh more challenging. A bases loaded single to left center scored two runs to make it a 6-0 score for the visitors.
- In the bottom of the seventh the heart of the Warriors order made a charge to get on the board, with Hubbard singling to left and stealing second to get a runner in scoring position with one out. A ground ball to second allowed her to advance to third, where Nicole Koshes worked a long at-bat to try and score the runner from third before a high popup into foul territory held the Warriors from getting on the board.
