Warriors Find Wrong End of Back-and-Forth Battle

BROOKLYN, N.Y. – The women's lacrosse team traveled to the campus of Long Island University for their final road game of the 2022 season. Despite a gritty, back-and-forth battle with the Sharks, the Warriors came up short in the end. Meghan Dzialo and Valdes once again had hat tricks, with Valdes adding another three assists to her day's total.

The Basics:
Score: LIU 14, Merrimack 11
Records: Merrimack 4-11, 4-3 NEC, LIU 5-11, 4-3 NEC

How it happened:
1st quarter:
  • The Warriors got on the board first, thanks to a caused turnover by Kelly Corrigan. Corrigan made a sprint from the Merrimack side of the field to a clear, where she turned it over to Olivia Valdes who found Natalie Calkins for the goal.
  • Meghan Dzialo would earn her first of the game, after several rounds of passing between Warriors around the arch.
  • Score at end of 1st: 4-2 LIU
2nd quarter:
  • The Warriors were working hard on both sides of the field throughout this quarter, as the offense would add two and the defense would shut down LIU for the first half of the quarter.
  • Valdes hustled against her defender to add one on a far-side shot. Minutes later, she would earn a free position shot, which she would dish to Taylor Darrell for the goal.
  • After allowing the Sharks to add three in a row, Merrimack added pressure to the home team with the help of Dzialo and Valdes adding their second goals of the day. The Warrior defense would stifle LIU's offense for the remainder of the quarter.
  • Score at end of 2nd: 6-7 LIU
3rd quarter:
  • LIU would score to open the quarter, but Merrimack would go on a scoring run of three unanswered goals to take the lead away from the home team.
  • Score at end of 3rd:
4th quarter:
  • Dzialo would bring the lead back to the Warriors on her third goal of the day, but the Sharks offense kicked it up a notch, tallying five unanswered goals.
  • Sophie Scearbo would work to trip up defenders with some fake-outs, and she would successfully collect her first goal of the day.
Final Score: 14-11 LIU
