Baseball Downed by Long Island Sunday

ANDOVER, MASS. – The Merrimack College baseball team lost to Long Island University on Sunday afternoon, 9-4. Alex Haba had three hits on the afternoon including a leadoff home run in the first inning. Michael Golankiewicz also homered in the first. The left fielder scored two on his bomb to right. Golankiewicz got his third RBI of the game in the fourth inning on a sac fly to right.

Rapid Recap

  • Haba hit his third home run of the season on a 0-2 count in the first inning, giving the Warriors an early lead. Christian Gemelli then singled. Golankiewicz homered to right to increase the Merrimack lead by two. Jake Macchi then singled. Scott Elliott followed up with a walk putting runners on first and second. Both base runners to not make it to home plate. The Sharks added one in the top of the second. Haba singled and Gemelli drew a free pass with one out in the second. Both were left on base. A grand slam by Long Island in the top of the third flipped the game and gave the Sharks a two-run lead. Elliott bunted his way on, but was left at first at the end of the inning. Long Island added another two runs in the top half of the fourth to go up four. Stephen Santarpia singled to lead off the fourth. Haba then doubled to left center, putting two runners on. Merrimack got one runner back on a wild pitch from the Long Island pitcher. 
  • Ben Nelson singled to center with one out in the bottom half of the fifth. He was left at first base. The Sharks got two runners in the sixth to increase their advantage to five runs. Peyton Heisner entered for the Warriors in the eighth and struck out the side, he did the same in the ninth.

WP: Torres (3-2) | LP: Gillette (2-5)  

  • Haba's hit streak extends to 17 games, which is the highest on the team and is the most games in a row on the season. He his currently hitting .391.
  • Heisner struck out the side in back-to-back innings. The six strikeouts is a new career-high for the freshman.

Up Next:

The Warriors will play their final home non-conference game of the season when Maine comes to town on Wednesday. First pitch is set for 3 p.m.
