Baseball Falters at Long Island Sunday

BROOKVILLE, N.Y. – The Merrimack College baseball team lost the rubber match of the three-game weekend series against Long Island University over the weekend. Warriors starter Cedric Gillette threw a strong seven in a third inning, allowing just three hits and one earned run while striking out four. He earned a no decision. Scott Elliott went two-for-four, including a two-run homerun that gave Merrimack the lead in the third inning. Ben Nelson also had two hits for the Warriors in the loss.

  • Alex Haba led off the game getting hit by a pitch. Elliott then followed up with reaching on an error, putting runners on first and second. The Warriors then went down in order. Long Island added a run in the first to take an early lead. Nelson singled in the second, but was stranded there for the duration of the inning. Elliott launched a solo home run to tie the game in the top of the third. The bomb was his second of the season. Michael Golankiewicz drew a free pass, but was picked off to end the inning. Nelson drew a walk in the fourth. He was caught trying to steal second two batters later to end the inning. Gillette rolled through the Sharks in the fourth inning, which made it nine straight batters retired in a row.
  • In the top half of the sixth, Elliott stayed hot and singled to left field. Golankiewicz then doubled to left, putting runners on second and third with no outs. Jake Macchi then singled to center, scoring Elliott, giving Merrimack their first lead of the game. Braydon Dolbashian hit a sac fly to left, scoring the runner from third and giving the Warriors a two-run advantage. The Sharks scored one run in the eighth to pull within one. Nelson doubled to start the top of the ninth. He was advanced to third, but then left there at the end of the inning. Long Island scored two in the bottom half of the ninth to win the game.

  • Gillette retired 18 batter in a row from the third until the end of the seventh.
  • Elliott now has two homeruns on the season. He previously hit none in his first two seasons with the Warriors.
