Macchi’s Career Day Sparks Victory for Baseball Over Wagner

LAKEWOOD, N.J. – Franklin native Jake Macchi had a career day in the Merrimack College baseball victory over Wagner College on Saturday afternoon. The junior designated hitter went four-for-five getting five RBI's in the process. Macchi opened the game with a single in the first and then a double in the third to set the tone for the Warrior offense. Scott Elliott also had two hits for Merrimack in the victory.

  • Warrior lead off man Alex Haba singled to center to start the game. In the advanced to second on a throwing error by the pitcher. Elliott was then hit by a pitch to put two runners on. Macchi ripped his first single of the game to center, scoring Haba from second. Merrimack starter Tyghe Healy did not let up a run in the bottom half of the first or second inning. Elliott singled to second with one out in the third. Macchi then doubled for the first time in the game, scoring Elliott and giving the Warriors a two run lead. Bryant Skurbe and Thomas Crowley drew back-to-back walks to load the bases. Kurtis Stadnicki then walked to score another run for Merrimack. Healy got the Seahawks to go down in order in the bottom half of the third. Haba was hit by a pitch to lead off the fourth, he then stole second. Macchi was up again a batter later and he singled home Haba once again for his  third RBI of the game. Healy continued to roll, not letting up a run in the bottom of the fourth.
  • Wagner added five runs in the bottom of the fifth to take a one run lead. Christian Gemelli earned a free pass to lead of the eighth for Merrimack. Crowley then bunted Gemelli over to second. Stadnicki doubled to left, scoring Gemelli from second and tying the game. Ben Nelson singled to center with two outs in the eighth, he advanced to second on a wild pitch. Haba walked putting two runners on. Elliott then also walked, loading the bases. Macchi was up once again and he did what he has been doing all afternoon, ripping a single and scoring two runs. This one gave Merrimack a two run lead. Braydon Dolbashian then singled home another run, making the score 9-5. Timmy Kalantzakos came into the game to pitch the final two innings for the Warriors and did not let up a hit.

  • Macchi has been on a tear this weekend. He now has six hits in two games.
  • Merrimack is now 4-1 all time against Wagner.
