Baseball Falters in Sacred Heart Closer

BRIDGEPORT, CONN. – The Merrimack College baseball team fell in the series closer with Sacred Heart University on Sunday afternoon. The Warriors took an early lead, but were held off as the Pioneers' offense sprinted to the end to take their only win in the three game stand.

  • The Warriors jumped offensively in the first inning, looking to continue the team's production from Friday's doubleheader. Leadoff hitter Alex Haba sent a double to center, and was brought in by a double to left by Scott Elliott for the first run of the day. Jake Macchi went for the third straight triple to cross Elliott in for the second run of the inning.
  • Merrimack scored again in the second, looking to re-take the lead after Sacred Heart put up a pair of runs in the bottom of the first. With one out, Andrew Selima worked a walk and moved to second after Ben Nelson was hit by a pitch. With two on and the top of the order back up, Haba sent his second double of the day to score Selima. With two runners in scoring position, Elliott cracked an RBI grounder to second for the second two-run inning for the Warriors.
