Baseball Suffers Setback Against Central Connecticut, Thursday

EW BRITAIN, CONN. – The Merrimack College baseball team suffered a loss on Friday afternoon against Central Connecticut State University. The teams were tied heading into the bottom of the eighth. The Blue Devils then scored five runs to pull away and win the game. Braydon Dolbashian had the lone RBI for the Warriors, scoring Christian Gemelli who singled earlier in the inning. Merrimack starter Wyatt Villella threw seven strong, allowing just one run on four hits, striking out nine.

  • Central Connecticut struck first in the bottom half of the first, giving them a one run lead. Kurtis Stadnicki got the Warriors first hit in the top of the third with no outs in the inning. Andrew Selima then reached on a fielder's choice, putting a different runner on first. Selima was left on first at the end of the inning. Gemelli singled with two down in the top of the fourth. Then then advanced to second on a passed ball, putting the first runner in scoring position on the day for Merrimack. Dolbashian then singled up the middle to score and tie the game. Michael Golankiewicz singled putting two runners on once again. Both were left in scoring position. 
  • Both teams battled back and forth, not allowing a hit from the start of inning seven to the start of inning eight. Villella exited in the bottom of the eighth, striking out nine batters, which is a season-high. Central Connecticut adds five in the bottom half of the eighth to take a five run lead into the ninth. Scott Elliott drew a free pass, but could not cross home plate.

  • Villella's nine strikeouts is the most by a Warrior starter so far this season.
