Baltimore, MD- The Merrimack Women's Softball team were defeated in their first game of the Retriever Classic by the Cornell Big Red and UMBC Retrievers by a score of 5-4. The game with UMBC did not finish and will not count or be made up.
Merrimack jumped out to the lead
Ellen Hubbard would open the bottom half of the first with a first pitch single and
Madison Cerpa would homer to put the Warriors up early.
Courtney Lanpher would also double but would be left stranded at second. The Warriors would extend the lead to four when Cerpa once came up big as she doubled home Alex Samuel and
Ellen Hubbard would reached themselves on a single and hit by pitch respectively.
In the top of the third, the Big Red would tie the game with a grand slam and would take the lead in the fourth inning with another home run.
In the final inning the Warriors had their best chance to go to extras after get two on base with two outs but the Warriors were unable to tie the score and fell in game one.
Notes and Numbers
- Madison Cerpa doubled and homered in the game, her first of the season, she had all four RBI in the game.
- Courtney Lampher also doubled and had two hits in the contest.
- Katelyn Thompson went 3.2 innings of scoreless relief, only allowing one hit and striking out two.
--Game two between UMBC went to a no contest due to not reaching the completion of the fifth inning, the stats and score will not count officially. The contest will not be made up.
Despite the game not being official,
Madison Cerpa continued where she left off in the first game, scoring
Alex Miller on a sac fly, and in the fifth inning, she had her second two RBI double of the day, scoring Lanpher and Miller, going 3 for 5 notching a home run, two doubles and seven RBI on the day.

The Warriors will play Morgan State and Cornell on Saturday, first pitch is at 10:30 and 12:30.respectively.
