Records: #14/14 Merrimack (23-13-1, 16-8-0) |Â Boston University (27-10-0)
In the first period, the Warriors came out hot, putting the pressure on early, and despite taking the first penalty of the night Merrimack would take advantage first,
Ben Brar found a streaking
Christian Felton down the middle who tipped past the Terriers goaltender to put the Warriors in front. The Warriors killed off their second chance of the night but the Warriors were assessed two more before the end of the frame, but the Warriors would carry the lead to the first intermission.
Â
In the second period, the Terriers would cash in on the five on three chance and tie the score under a minute into the period.
Â
With the Warriors looking to regain momentum they took their fifth penalty of the evening, but it would be negated almost immediately. The Warriors would reestablish their footing from there, as their shot totals began to rise and after forcing a faceoff in the offensive zone they would take the lead back as
Mac Welsher fired the puck in off the ensuing faceoff to retake the lead. The Warriors would survive a late charge to hold the lead heading into the final period.
Â
In the third, The Warriors were looking for their third early but couldn't convert, and Boston University would tie the score just before the halfway mark. Â From there the game became like a pendulum swing back and forth, scoring chances on both sides, Merrimack's best chance was knocked out of the goal crease just before the goal line, while on the other side, Merrimack defenders got in key lanes and
Hugo Ollas made big stops to force the game to overtime for the third straight game for Merrimack.
Boston University would score less than two minutes into the overtime period to win the Hockey East championship.
