North Andover, Mass—The Merrimack Men's Lacrosse scored 15 times and picked up their first win in America East Conference as they defeated the New Jersey Institute of Technology Highlanders by a score of 15-12 on a sunny, cool afternoon at Duane Stadium on Saturday.
In the first quarter, The Warriors and Highlanders traded goals, before NJIT took a two goal advantage, but the Warriors would find lightning in a bottle as
Kasey Mongillo would cut the lead to one with 30 seconds left and
Brian Russell would tie the game at four with 0.4 seconds to play in the quarter.
In the second quarter, the Highlanders took a two goal lead again but the Warriors would battle back into the lead with three straight goals from three different goal scorers as
Brian Russell,
Jack Rooney, and
Trace Hogan scored to go up by a goal. After NJIT tied it late, Mongillo would find the last second magic again, scoring with 11 seconds left to put Merrimack up 8-7 at the halftime break.
In the third, the Warriors started hot, scoring three times in the first 8 minutes to take a four goal lead but the pendulum like nature of the game continued as the Highlanders cut the lead back to one. Merrimack would once again score in the final minute to take a two goal lead into the final 15 minutes.
In the final quarter, the Warriors would once again take a four goal lead with two goals in under two minutes.
Brian Russell would score the Warriors 15
th of the game and his sixth of the contest to close out the win.
Notes and Numbers:
The Warriors return to action on the road next Friday against the UMass Lowell Riverhawks. The game is scheduled to begin at 7 PM.
