Men's Hockey Stumbles Against Maine

Orono, ME — The Merrimack College men's ice hockey team was defeated in their opening game of the weekend by the Maine Black Bears by a score of 5-0 on Friday night.

Merrimack (1-4-1, 0-2-1): 0, Maine (5-0-1, 2-0-1): 5

Merrimack found themselves on the back foot quickly as Maine scored 70 seconds into the contest on the game's first shot. Maine later tallied their second goal of the period just after the final TV timeout to carry the 2-0 lead into the intermission.

In the second, Merrimack would make a strong penalty kill early in the frame, but Maine eventually broke through to score their third of the game, and then added their fourth on the powerplay three minutes later.

The Black Bears scored a fifth goal only 22 seconds into the third, which would facilitate a goaltending change as Nils Wallstrom made his first appearance for the Warriors replacing Max Lundgren. Wallstrom kept Maine scoreless the rest of the way making nine saves in the process.

·       Max Wattvil led the team in blocks with five.
·       Nick Pierre led the way in shots on goal with three.
