North Andover, Mass.- The Merrimack College women's ice hockey team scored first and battled hard but fell short to the University of Connecticut Huskies by a score of
3-2 on Friday night at Lawler Arena.
Merrimack (4-6-1, 2-5-1): 2, Connecticut (7-6-0, 6-2-0): 3
Merrimack took the early lead as
Maria Lindberg would force the neutral zone takeaway and do it all on her own as she scored the unassisted goal
at 3:57 of the first period, but UConn turned it around quickly and tied the game up 64 seconds later. The Huskies registered a second at
15:01 of the period and held the 2-1 lead into the first intermission.
In the second, UConn scored their third of the contest shorthanded
at 7:33 of the frame,
Calli Hogarth would make 12 saves in the period, keeping the deficit at two heading to the third.
In the third, Merrimack would use a five on three powerplay to their advantage as
Maria Lindberg powered the shot through for her second of the game to cut the lead to one, but despite a late Merrimack push which included outshooting the Huskies 11 to 7, UConn would hold on to get the victory.
