Women's Hockey Falls in Final Contest in 2024 As They Drop Heartbreaker to Maine

Portland, ME.- The Merrimack College women's ice hockey team fought back from two goals down, but were sunk by a late goal in their final game of 2024, as the Maine Black Bears captured the 3-2 win on Saturday night in Portland.

Merrimack (6-12-1, 3-8-1): 2, Maine (4-16-0, 4-10-0): 3

Maine scored the opening goal just two minutes in and they would hold that lead for the rest of the period.

In the second, Calli Hogarth would stop all six shots to keep the deficit at one into the third.

In the third, Maine would score quickly, doubling their lead 21 seconds in, but Merrimack would counter punch almost immediately afterwards, as Abby Poitras joined the rush on a two on one and would put the puck into the roof of the net just 21 seconds later. It would come down to the final minute as with the net empty, the Warriors would score their second extra attacker goal in as many games and their third of the season as Rachel Bjorgan would pick the bend in the post for her own snipe, tying the game at two with 57.4 seconds left. The Black Bears however would break the Warriors hearts, scoring the game winning goal just 20 seconds later.
