NORTH ANDOVER, Mass. – The Merrimack College men's volleyball team was beaten tonight by Daemen University in three hard-fought sets
The Basics
Score: Merrimack 0, Daemen University 3
Records: Merrimack (3-7, 1-1), Daemen University (8-2, 3-0)
How It Happened
The first would be a good one as we would see plenty of lead changes throughout, with each team fighting tooth and nail. Freshman Yulius Melvin Brown Rudolf would have 2 of his 8 kills early on during a small Merrimack run to give them a 12-10 lead. Daemon University stayed right in the game as both teams were within two points for the rest of the set. The Warriors would have the lead late 23-22, but the Wildcats would score 3 straight to clinch the first set 25-23.
The Warriors came out firing on all cylinders on the second set, as they would be up 6-2 to start. Merrimack maintained their 4-point lead for a while until a Daemen 6-1 run put the game in the opponent's favor. The Warriors went on a run of their own, outscoring the Wildcats 5-1 to take a 17-14 lead.
Logan Whitaker did what he does best and produced 3 of his team-high 14 kills late in the set, putting Merrimack up 23-22. Some déjà vu from the first set would kick in as Daemen would score the last 3 points and take set two 25-23.
Merrimack would not be discouraged in set three as the game stayed tight throughout. Daemen took a three-point lead to go up 8-5 at the beginning of the set. The Warriors hovered around that 4-point deficit for the entirety of the set, being down as much as six. They would continue to fight and show signs of life with some big plays.
Reece Lindstrom set up
Kai Vogel for a kill to surpass his career-high in assists and bring Merrimack to within three making the score 23-20. A couple of service errors on the Warriors end would complete the set and Daemon University defeated Merrimack 25-21, winning the match in three sets.
