Baseball Holds On For First Win of the Season Against VCU

RICHMOND, VA. – The Merrimack College baseball team beat Virginia Commonwealth University in game two of a three games series on Saturday afternoon. The victory was the Warriors first of the season.

Rapid Recap

The Rams struck first in the first inning scoring two runs. After not scoring in their first two times to the plate, Dawson Bryce laced a single to start off the top of the third. Cam Marshall then reached on an error to put two runners on. Hayden Bond grounded into a fielder's choice to give the Warriors their first run of the game. Cavan Brady then ripped a single to tie the game at two. With two done in the third, Christian Scanlon launched a two-run home run to put Merrimack up two. VCU would add two runs in the bottom half of the third to tie the game at four.  The Warriors got back to scoring in the top of the fourth. Frankie Ferrentino started the inning off with a walk. Chris Goode then singled to left to put two runners on. Bryce then singled to load up the bases. Ferrentino scored on a passed ball. Later in the inning, Alex Haba grounded into a double play, but scored a run. With two outs, Brady singled home the third run of the inning, putting the Warriors up three. The Rams would score four runs in the bottom of the fourth to go up by one.

In the top of the sixth, walks from Haba and Brady put two runners on. Logan Castellano then singled home a run to tie the game at eight. Ferrentino would hit a sac fly to left field to score a run and put Merrimack up one. VCU would battle back in the bottom half of the sixth to tie the game at nine. Bond opened the top of the eighth with a single. Brady followed up with a single of his own to put two runners on. With the bases loaded Bond would score on a passed ball. Goode then singled home a run to put the Warriors up by two. A single from Christian Gemelli would score three runs and put Merrimack up by five. In the top of the ninth, Ferrentino doubled down the line to score a run. Bryce then drew a bases loaded walk to put the Warriors up seven. The Rams would score three times in the bottom of the ninth, but it was not enough to beat Merrimack on Saturday night.

The Warriors scored 16 runs on 14 hits and drew 10 walks in the victory.
