Wilmington, N.C.—Merrimack Softball picked up a split in their first two games in their weekend tournament in Wilmington, losing 8-3 to Kent State and rebounding with a 4-2 win over UNC-Wilmington.
GAME 1: Kent State scored the game's first four runs in the first 3 ½ innings before Merrimack fired back into the contest after a two run double from
Sydney Samuel scoring
Caity Lemay and
Madeline Arvai before
Sofia Palyan scored Samuel with a sac fly. The Golden Flash would score once in the fifth and put the first game of the day to rest with a three run seventh inning.
Notes and Numbers:
GAME 2: Merrimack was able to get off to a good start in the second game of the day as
Courtney Lanpher doubled in the first and would score on a throwing error, that would be the game's lone run until the sixth inning, as
Sofia Palyan would score
Gabby Kaduson with a single to left field. UNC-Wilmington would tie the game in the bottom half of the inning but Merrimack would take the lead right back in the seventh as they would score two runs on four hits and
Madie Fornwalt would finish the complete game with a 1-2-3 final frame.
