Men's Lacrosse Drops Conference Matchup to UMBC

NORTH ANDOVER, MASS. – The Merrimack College men's lacrosse team was downed in its America East matchup against the University of Maryland Baltimore County on Saturday afternoon. Kasey Mongillo led the team with three goals.

Rapid Recap
The Retrievers struck first scoring two minutes into the game. Jack Kolbe then found the back of the net with his first goal of the afternoon to tie the game at one. UMBC then added three goals to take a three-goal advantage. In the final seconds of the first quarter, KJ Delane put the Warriors down by two heading into the second quarter. The second stanza opened with the Retrievers scoring the first four goals to make their advantage six. Kolbe scored his second goal of the afternoon to slice the lead to five. UMBC added a goal to go back up six. With a minute to go before halftime, Brian Russell scored his first of two goals. The Retrievers scored as time expired in the first half to head into halftime up six.
 
Mangillo opened up the second half scoring with a goal two minutes into the third quarter. UMBC then scored two goals to take their biggest lead of the afternoon at eight. Mongillo and Russell both found the back of the net with goals for the Warriors to drop the lead down to five heading into the final quarter. Thirty seconds into the fourth, Mongillo scored again, getting the lead down to four. Four minutes later Sam Walsh scored to make it a three-point game with 10-minutes to play. UMBC finished the game on a three-goal unanswered streak to win the game by six.
 
Notes and Numbers
  • Jack Rooney led the Warriors with three assists.
  • Rooney also led the team with four groundballs.
  • Eight different Merrimack players caused a turnover.

The Warriors head back on the road to take on the University of Vermont on Saturday. Game time is set for 2:30 p.m.
