Greensboro, N.C.—Merrimack Softball began their set of games in the UNC-Greensboro Invitational with games against the UNC-Greensboro Spartans and the Charleston Southern Buccaneers by scores of 5-3 and 2-0 on Friday.
Game 1: Merrimack took the early lead as Sydney Samuel smacked a hard-hit ball to short and would reach on the ensuring error, scoring Ellen Hubbard. In the second inning Hubbard would knock home Sofia Palyan with a RBI single on a hit just inside the left field line. The Warriors would cash in again as Madison Cerpa hit a long sac fly to right field scoring Palyan.
The Spartans would score two runs in the second inning and tie the game with a home run in the third.
As the game entered a stalemate in the middle innings, UNC-Greensboro would take the lead for good in the sixth inning scoring twice.
Notes and Numbers:
Game 2: Charleston Southern scored once in the second inning and would add an insurance run in the fourth. Merrimack's best chance would be in the sixth inning when they load the bases with two outs but were unable to get on the board.
