Men’s Lacrosse Make it Two Straight in Victory Over UMass Lowell

NORTH ANDOVER, MASS. – The Merrimack College men's lacrosse team beat in-state rival UMass Lowell on Friday afternoon under the light at Dunae Stadium. Kasey Mongillo scored four goals to lead the way for the Warriors in the victory.

Rapid Recap
The River Hawks scored the first goal of the night to go up a minute into the game. Mongillo then rattled off two straight goals to give Merrimack the lead in a low scoring first quarter. Trace Hogan found the back of the net for his first goal of the night less then a minute into the second quarter. Six seconds later Karl Sutter scored to put the Warriors up by three. UMass Lowell added a goal to cut the advantage to two. Brian Russell scored five minutes into the second to put the lead back at three. The River Hawks answered back slicing the lead back to two. Mangillo would score again, making the lead three. UMass Lowell trimmed the lead down to two before halftime.

Hogan started the third quarter the same way he started the second with a goal less then a minute into the stanza. The River Hawks answered back with a goal of their own to make it a three goal game. Hogan would score again to increase the lead to three Brian Bouwman found the back of the net with five and a half minutes to play in the third quarter four. Jack Rooney and Mikey Kloepfer would add two goals before the end of the third quarter to put the Warriors up six heading into the fourth. Mongillo scored his final goal of the game a minute into the final quarter. The River Hawks added three straight goals to cut the lead down to four. Russell and Rooney both scored to increase the advantage to six. UMass Lowell scored with two minutes to go in the fourth, but the comeback was not enough to beat Merrimack on Friday night.  
 
Notes and Numbers
  • Michael Ferrara finished the game with a team-high three forced turnovers.
  • Four Warriors finished the game with four points (Rooney, Mongillo, Hogan, Russell)
  • Griffin Caiozzo had a career-high 13 saves in the victory.

Up Next
The Warriors play their final home game of the season next Sunday at 1 p.m. against the University of Albany.
