Football Dropped by Maine in Home Opener

North Andover, Mass. – The Merrimack College football team was defeated by the University of Maine in its home opener on Saturday afternoon 26-15

How It Happened
  • On the Black Bears first offensive possession of the game, Donte Williams forced a fumble which was picked up by Grant Jackson. Jackson took it all the way to the end zone to put the Warriors up by seven early in the first quarter. After forcing a punt Merrimack took back over on offense. The dive would end with a Lliam Davis 33-yard field goal to put the Warriors up by 10. The first quarter would end with Merrimack up 10. Maine would find the end zone two plays into the second quarter. The Black Bears failed on a two-point conversion which kept Merrimack up by four. On their next offensive possession, the Warriors would add another field goal from Davis, this time from 37 yards. The kick put Merrimack up seven. With five and a half minutes to play in the first half, Jay Thompson sacked the Maine quarterback in the end zone for a safety. At halftime, the Warriors found themselves up 15-6.
  • With just over five minutes to play in the third quarter, the Black Bears found the end zone for the first time of the afternoon. The score put them down two. A punt for the Warriors would give Maine the ball back heading into the fourth quarter. The Black Bear kicker would hit a 28-yard field goal to give Maine its first lead of the game by one. On their next offensive possession, the Black Bears would score a touchdown to go put eight. After forcing a Warrior punt, Maine knocked down a 33-yard field goal to put the game out of reach for Merrimack.  
Notes & Numbers
  • Corbett rushed for a game-high 80 yards on 15 attempts.
  • Thompson led the team in tackles with eight, including one sack. DJ Frazier was second on the team with seven tackles.
  • The touchdown by Jackson was the first of his career.  
Up next
The Warriors stay at home next Saturday when the Big Green of Dartmouth visit North Andover for homecoming weekend. Kick off is set for 1 p.m.
