How It Happened

After a tough defeat on Friday the Warriors looked to make a change heading into their homecoming game against the Golden Griffins. It took a few rallies for the Warriors to shake the cobwebs off as they fell into a hole quickly 4-1. Stellar assists from none other than Sophia DeBonis made it possible for the Warriors to climb back into the match. The Warriors got their first lead of the day when Marissa Kobelski notched not one but two solo blocks! Multiple failed services aces from the Griffs padded the Warrior lead out to three. Canisius fired back with a few scores knotting the match up again. Both teams traded blows until they reached a 24-24 game. Canisius succeeded under pressure scoring two points and upsetting the Warriors for a set one win.

The Warriors looked to put the first set behind them as they took a fast lead over the Golden Griffins. The first half of the set was back and forth. The Warriors received support in the form of kills from multiple players. Aubrey Baker tallied two straight kills to move the lead out to two. In the closing rallies of the second set the Warriors struggled, making multiple attack errors that helped the Griffs make a comeback. Canisius blitzed the Warriors in the end, stealing the second set from them 25-23.

After yet another deflating loss, the Warriors looked to avoid the sweep in the third set. DeBonis grabbed two assists and a kill which helped the team take the lead at 5-1. The Golden Griffins responded with a dominant run that put them in the command of the lead 11-9. The Warriors continued to struggle against the Canisius push. Trailing big in the latter half of the set, the Warriors went on a 6-0 run to tie the match. The Griffs attack errors killed any momentum they had and gave it all away to Merrimack. The Warriors went on to stun the Griffs for a third set victory eliminating the chance of a sweep.

The Warriors looked to keep it rolling against the Golden Griffins after a satisfying come from behind victory in the third set. The set started off with both teams trading kills. Baker came away with a few kills courtesy of great assists from DeBonis. The Golden Griffins struggled to keep up with the Warrior attack since their 6-0 run in the third set. Repeated errors from the defense opened the door for the Warriors. A vicious Warrior attack led by Aubrey Baker's nine kills won them the fourth set 25-17. Merrimack has found themselves right back into the match after winning the past two sets.
