FAIRFIELD, CT –
Ernest Shelton scored 19 points and
Kevair Kennedy had 18 as the Merrimack men's basketball team improved to 3-0 in MAAC play with an 80-72 win at Sacred Heart on Monday.
Shelton made three 3-pointers, his 12th time in 14 games with multiple treys. Kennedy connected on 6-of-10 field goals and had seven assists. Sophomore
Tye Dorset scored in double-figures for the seventh-straight game with 16 points, making 5-of-11 field goals, including three 3-pointers.
"I was a little nervous because we haven't played since Dec 14th," Merrimack head coach
Joe Gallo said. "I was a nice guy and gave them an extra day for Christmas, so we had five days off. But we had three awesome practices. We came out with a great start, and then I loved how we came out in the second half, which is probably the most important run of the game."
Andrés Marrero helped the Warriors out to a 38-32 halftime lead, scoring all 14 of his points before intermission. Marrero finished 5-of-10 from the field, including 4-of-9 from behind the arc.
KC Ugwuakazi scored seven points, grabbed nine rebounds and had three blocks. His thunderous dunk in the final two minutes put Merrimack up 11.
Merrimack returns home to host Mount St. Mary's on Friday at 3 p.m. in Lawler Arena.
