North Andover, MA — Avery Anderson and Stina Sandberg both scored for Merrimack as the women's hockey team battled to the finish on Teddy Bear Toss night against Providence College at Lawler Arena.
Lauren Lyons made 20 of her 42 total saves in the first period to keep the game scoreless.
After Providence opened the scoring in the second, it was Lyons who got the Warriors back on track. Lyons played the puck on a clear to Hailey Eikos who carried the puck into the corner before slinging a pass to a speeding Avery Anderson who scored the goal which triggered the Teddy Bear toss. Anderson was even able to throw one herself as she caught a sailing bear in the celebration line before throwing it over her shoulder. As for Lyons, she collected the first assist of her career and the first for a Merrimack goaltender to collect a point since November 8th, 2024.
In the third period, Providence would strike with two goals in fifteen seconds to double their advantage, but Merrimack refused to quit as Stina Sandberg scored on a scramble in front with the net empty, but the Warriors were unable to send the game into overtime.
The Merrimack women's hockey team will be delivering all teddy bears collected today to the children at Mass General Hospital.
The Warriors have the rest of December off before they return to play after the new year on January 3rd against the Bemidji State Beavers at Lawler Arena.
