Women's Lacrosse Drops Season Opener to UMass Lowell

NORTH ANDOVER, Mass. – The Merrimack College women's lacrosse team dropped its season opener on Wednesday afternoon to UMass Lowell 17-8. Lindsay Atkinson scored six goals for the Warriors, tying her career high for goals in a single game.

The Warriors saw a defensive start to the first quarter of play, as the Riverhawks scored six times to go up 6-0. Lindsay Atkinson found the back of the net with two minutes left in play to put the Warriors on the board. The Riverhawks opened the scoring in the second quarter, but the Warriors were quick to respond as Atkinson netted her second of the night after a crucial ground ball pickup. The Riverhawks notched four more goals in the second quarter. With just six minutes remaining in the second, Atkinson netted her third of the night to make it 12-3. The Warriors would ride this momentum into the third quarter as freshman Hailey Schnider tallied her first career goal. The Riverhawks answered with two goals to balloon the lead to 10. The Warriors began to pick up steam in the fourth quarter as Kaitlin Roche set up another Atkinson score. UMass Lowell would net one however, the Warriors registered three consecutive goals looking to cut the deficit. Freshman Brooke Brennan notched her first career goal off a successful groundball pickup by Sophia Ingenito. Atkinson would net the other two for Merrimack but ultimately this wasn't enough to overcome the Riverhawks as they scored two more goals to end the game 17-8.
