FAIRFIELD, Conn. – The Merrimack College women's basketball team split their regular season series with Sacred Heart after a road loss on Thursday night.

Merrimack handled business in the first go around against Sacred Heart at home, winning that one by double digits. This time it was a different story. The Pioneers went on an early 14-0 run to make it 20-6. The Warriors sliced into the deficit going into the second with the score 24-14 Sacred Heart. A 13-2 run by the Pioneers to open the second quarter pushed the Merrimack deficit to 21 points. The score settled at 44-24 in favor of the home Pioneers at the half.
In the second half, the defense for the Warriors stiffened as they allowed just 11 third quarter points. The offense was hard to come by in the frame, scoring just eight points themselves, as they were unable to slash the SHU lead. The fourth quarter saw 16 points put up by Merrimack including four points from
Claudia Gallegos. The Warriors went on to lose to the rival Pioneers, 74-48.
Notes and Numbers
- Thalia Shepard once again led Merrimack in scoring with 15 points
- Madison Roman filled the stat sheet with nine points, seven assists and five rebounds
- Claudia Gallegos notched her season high with eight points off the bench
