Women's Hockey Battles Back, But Drops Contest in Overtime to New Hampshire

Durham, NH.- The Merrimack College women's ice hockey team overcame a three goal first period deficit to force overtime but couldn't pick up the extra league point as New Hampshire took the 4-3 win in the extra frame on a snowy Thursday night at the Whittemore Center.

Merrimack (7-19-3, 4-15-3): 3, New Hampshire (14-14-1, 10-12-0): 4

A week after the Warriors found themselves up three goals in the first period, the New Hampshire Wildcats would strike with three of their own to stun the Warriors in the first twenty minutes.

Undeterred, the Warriors would tilt the ice in their favor just two minutes into the second period as Michaela Littlewood took the rebound off the point shot and put in the open cage for her third goal in six games. Despite being the only goal of the frame for the Warriors, they outshoot the Wildcats 15-5.

Spurred on by their offensive flurry in the second, Merrimack cut the lead to one as New Hampshire made a line change, Maria Lindberg was left all alone in front and her shot squeezed through the goaltender less than two minutes into the third. Midway through the final 20, Merrimack completed the comeback as Alex Ferguson, playing in her 100th Merrimack game dropped the puck on a rush to Abby Poitras who rifled it top shelf to tie the game at three, and it would remain that way into the overtime period.

In the overtime however, the Wildcats scored under a minute in to deny the Warriors an extra point and the win.
