Rapid Recap
Merrimack was looking to sweep their road trip in western New York after a win against Niagara on Thursday. To begin the first quarter, the Warriors defense was suffocating. Merrimack forced 11 first quarter turnovers with
Paloma Garcia leading the charge having a flurry of steals. Merrimack held a 19-10 lead going into the second quarter. Canisius responded to the deficit and drew closer. The Griffs ended up grabbing the lead right before halftime with the score 31-27 going into the break.
Out of halftime, Merrimack cut it to a one-point game at 36-35 after a
Thalia Shepard layup. The Griffs pushed their lead back to six at 43-47 before a 10-2 run from the Warriors to regain the lead at 47-45. Merrimack kept the advantage going into the fourth at 48-47. In the final quarter of play, the Warriors' trio of sophomores, Garcia, Shepard and Roman, dealt with foul issues throughout. First it was Garcia picking up her fifth and then Shepard quickly thereafter. Still,
Rose Caso was able to keep Merrimack in it with a couple clutch buckets down the stretch. However, Canisius had an answer to the Warriors offense as Merrimack would go on to lose 68-62 and split their road trip.
