NORTH ANDOVER, MA -- The Merrimack College women's volleyball team was victorious Friday night defeating conference opponent Marist in a five set thriller 3-2 by scores of 18-25, 25-17, 25-20, 15-25, 16-14.
It was one of the best all around efforts Coach Ken Nichols had seen from his squad all season long and several of his players were able to make their mark on the stat sheet. Junior outside hitter Mckenna Shotwell had a stellar game as she was able to record 20 kills on the night, good for a season high and just coming two kills short of a career high. Shotwell's counterpart Jocelyn Hammerstrand the sophomore opposite hitter had herself an impactful night with 10 kills. And the Warriors felt the impact on the defensive end from senior libero Ella Maldonado who set her season high with 20 digs. Freshman setter Devon Lowe and senior setter Sophia DeBonis were able to distribute the ball efficiently on the outing with 22 and 20 assists respectively.
Coach Nichols reflected on the team's first victory of the season and said this, "A very rewarding win and a true team effort. Marist is a well coached team and clearly deep as they showed us some things we had not scouted. I am impressed with how we adjusted, especially late in the match. Everyone found a way to contribute and tonight was a testament to the mindset of this team."
The Warriors will be back in action Saturday afternoon when they will host the Siena Saints from The Sakowich Center, with first serve set for 2 pm. You can catch the action streaming live on ESPN +.
