STORRS, Conn. -- The
Merrimack women's hockey team battled back to tie the game in the third period, but were unable to complete the comeback in a 5-3 defeat against No. 6 UConn on Saturday.
Mady Cipolla scored twice for the Warriors, including the game-tying goal at 5:40 of the third period. Cipolla's game-tying tally came just three minutes after
Olivia Grabianowski cut Merrimack's deficit to 3-2 with a twine-seeking slap shot.
The Huskies scored the eventual game-winning goal 11 minutes into the third period before adding an empty-netter in the final minute.
Five different Warriors --
Maggie Kime,
Madison Vittands,
Kerttu Lehmus,
Stina Sandberg and
Emma Pfeffer -- all got on the scoresheet with one assist each.
Solveig Gisler also reached a career milestone as she appeared in her 100
th career game at Merrimack.
The Warriors enter the Hockey East playoffs as the 10th seed in the tournament. They will open the postseason Wednesday against an opponent who is yet to be named.
