NORTH ANDOVER, Mass. – Brian Murphy, who spent the past five seasons at the helm of the Merrimack College baseball program, has decided to step away from the sidelines to pursue an opportunity outside of baseball.
Murphy recently was named the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) Coach of the Year following the 2026 season and helped the program earn its first-ever MAAC postseason win.
"It has been a privilege to coach at Merrimack and I am grateful for the many dedicated players, coaches and staff members that made it so enjoyable," Murphy said. "I look forward to following the continued rise of Merrimack College, Merrimack Athletics and the baseball program."
A graduate of Merrimack College and captain of the baseball team in 2003, Murphy and the Warriors compiled a 20-10 record against conference opponents in 2026. The Warriors capped the regular season tied for the second-best record in the MAAC after they were picked to finish 12th in the preseason coaches poll. Merrimack concluded the campaign 27-29 overall after a 10-game win streak in conference play.
"Brian has been instrumental in the growth and success of Merrimack baseball, helping guide the program through its Division I transition and establishing it as a competitor in the MAAC," Merrimack athletic director Joe Foley said. "We greatly appreciate the commitment, passion and leadership he brought to our student-athletes and our department. We thank Brian for everything he has done for Merrimack and wish him nothing but success in the future."
Murphy went 114-140-2 during his five seasons at the helm with a 79-71 record against conference opponents. He led the Warriors to a 33-win season in 2024, Merrimack's final season in the Northeast Conference (NEC).
Murphy became the seventh coach in Merrimack program history when he was hired in Sept. 2021. Murphy spent eight seasons at William & Mary before he made the move to Merrimack. He was named the Coastal Athletic Association (CAA) Coach of the Year in 2014 after he won 34 games in his first season with the Tribe. William & Mary had four 30-win seasons and one NCAA Tournament bid during Murphy's tenure with the Tribe. He made previous stops at Brown University and Bryant University prior to starting his career as a collegiate head coach.
A national search for Merrimack's next baseball coach will begin immediately.
