NEW LONDON, Conn. – Senior
Frank Vega (Lima, Peru) registered a pair of victories in A doubles and a straight-sets victory in A singles to lead the Merrimack College men's tennis team at the Warriors' third tournament of the fall, hosted by Connecticut College.
Vega paired with sophomore
Alex Fedorov (Guilderland, N.Y.) in doubles, beating the No. 1 options from Stonehill and the Coast Guard. The duo never lost serve over the two matches, topping the Skyhawks by an 8-4 score before an 8-6 win over the Bears. Vega faced Trinity College's top student-athlete in singles, dominating to win the opener in seven games (6-1) before closing the match with a 6-2 victory in the second set.
Other doubles highlights including a comeback win for junior
Alex Slobin (Fairfield, Conn.) and sophomore
Paul Weidinger (Leipzig, Germany). The combo faced the third-flight pairing from Stonehill, falling behind 5-0 before rallying to force a tiebreaker, winning that by a 7-4 margin to take the match, 9-8.
Senior
Mikhail Belov (Krasnoarmeyskoy, Russia) and Fedorov also won singles matches. Belov joined Vega in the A Draw, beating Stonehill's Trent Newman in two sets (6-2, 6-0). Fedorov faced the Skyhawks' Russell White, rallying from a first-set defeat to win the second set, 6-2, before a 10-7 match-clinching win in the closing frame.
The Warriors play their final event of the fall this week when the Warriors take on Gordon College at 4 p.m. on Thursday.
