AMESBURY, Mass. – Merrimack College men's hockey players,
Declan Carlile,
Zachary Borgiel and
Hugo Ollas, were all honored with Hockey East weekly awards, as announced by the league office Monday.
Carlile was named the Hockey East Player of the Week, while Borgiel and Ollas were named Co-Goaltenders of the Week after the trio helped Merrimack complete a two-game weekend sweep of then #17 Providence.
The junior defenseman lit up the scoresheet over the weekend with contributions on both ends of the ice. He scored a goal in both games to make it two points on the weekend, but he also registered a +3 rating and blocked nine shots, including seven Saturday. Six of those blocked shots Saturday came in the third period and a trio of them were on a late penalty kill that kept the Warriors in the lead. Carlile now has 15 points in 21 games this winter and leads Hockey East in both plus/minus rating (+17) and blocked shots (46).
Ollas and Borgiel split starts against the Friars, as Ollas got the nod Friday, then Borgiel was between the pipes Saturday. Ollas made 34 saves to earn the victory in the 3-2 decision for his fifth triumph of the year. Borgiel was also outstanding in the second game, as the sophomore got in front of 33 of Providence's 34 shots to get the win in a 2-1 final. He is now tied with Ollas for the team lead in wins with five as well.
It's the second weekly award of the season for Carlile and the second for Ollas as well.
Merrimack, who is now receiving votes in the
DCU/USCHO national poll, is set for a Merrimack Valley showdown with #10 UMass Lowell this coming weekend. The teams meet Friday at Lawler Rink at 7:00 pm, then again the following night at Tsongas Center at 6:05 pm.
