BURLINGTON, VT — The Merrimack Men's Hockey team made it three straight wins as they scored five times, including three times in the second period to outpace the University of Vermont Catamounts by a score of 5-4 on Monday night at Gutterson Fieldhouse.
Vermont opened the scoring in the contest with a goal just over a minute in, but the Warriors would take command as the game progressed with Parker Lalonde feeding Michael Emerson on a two-on-one chance to tie the score midway through the first. Caelan Fitzpatrick put the Warriors ahead 2-1 late in the frame.
In the second period, the Warriors kept their foot on the gas as Daniel Astapovich and Ryan O'Connell found the back of the net to go up 4-1. Vermont quickly recovered to cut the MC lead in half at 4-2 just a minute later. Shortly after the midway point of the period, Mark Hillier buried a shot to put the Warriors up 5-2. Once again, Vermont quickly rebounded and tallied another. Merrimack would carry the 5-3 lead into the second intermission.
The Catamounts cut the lead to one in the late stages of the third period, but Max Lundgren would stand tall from there, making 13 saves in the period and 33 saves overall to collect his eighth win of the season in the 5-4 victory.
This is the third time this season that Merrimack has scored five goals or more in a game.
Ryan O'Connell, Parker Lalonde and Daniel Astapovich all had multi-point games.
The Warriors enter the new year with a non-conference contest against the Brown University Bears in Providence on Saturday, January 3rd at 7:00 p.m.
