North Andover, MA.-- The Merrimack College men's ice hockey team were swept in their return home to Lawler Arena by a final score of 2-1 on Saturday night by the Providence College Friars.
Merrimack (13-18-1, 9-12-1): 1, Providence (20-8-5, 9-7-5 HEA): 2
In the opening period, Merrimack would score first for the second consecutive night as a low event period was eventually jump started by a Warriors powerplay that saw
Seamus Powell hammer a point shot into the roof of the net on a pass from
Caden Cranston for the lone goal of the opening 20 minutes.
In the second, the Warriors were awarded two powerplays but couldn't convert on either opportunity, as the Friars cut the lead to one, shortly after one expired penalty and they would snag the lead in the final second of the period to take the lead into the room.
In the third period, Friars would continue to stifle the Warriors attempts to tie the score and extend the game further, as their best chance came with the goalie pulled and their three on two odd man rush ended with the puck skittering wide in the final seconds as Providence held on to capture the win.
