Men’s Basketball Cuts Nets After Double-Overtime Thriller Vs. Iona

NORTH ANDOVER, Mass. - The Merrimack men's basketball team didn't want to share.

The Warriors earned a double-overtime victory, 88-86, over Iona at Lawler Arena on Sunday afternoon, and in doing so claimed the MAAC regular-season title outright. Merrimack had earned share of the crown Friday night.

Merrimack went undefeated at home (11-0) during the 2025-26 season. It's the first time the Warriors finished unbeaten on their home floor since 1990-1991 campaign.

As for the win against the Gaels, the Warriors had six different players finish with double figures. Merrimack overcame a 77-71 deficit with just over a minute remaining in the first overtime and trailed by one in the second overtime, as well.

Kevair Kennedy scored a team-high 20 points while only sitting for eight seconds in the 50-minute game. He piled on seven assists, six rebounds and five steals.

Ernest Shelton finished with 18 points after he splashed three 3-pointers, including one in double-overtime to extend Merrimack's to 87-83 with 25 seconds left. Shelton added six rebounds.

Tye Dorset, who never came off the floor, scored 15 points with five assists while shooting 56 percent from the field (5-for-9) in all 50 minutes.

Todd Brogna (season-high 13 points, nine rebounds, five assists, five blocks) delivered a big shot for the second straight game.  Brogna's 3-pointer with 1:06 left in the first overtime cut Merrimack's deficit to 77-74 before Andres Marrero hit three straight free throws to tie the game with 28.4 ticks left. Marrero (12 points) was a plus-14 in 40 minutes.

KC Ugwuakazi scored eight of his 10 points in the first half to help the Warriors take a 36-33 advantage into the break.

The Warriors close their regular season on the road with Canisius on Friday and Niagara on Sunday.
