NORTH ANDOVER, Mass. – The Merrimack College men's volleyball team on Tuesday accepted an invitation from the NEC Council of Presidents to join the NEC as an associate member starting in 2026-27.
Merrimack launched its men's volleyball program in 2023 as a member of the NEC, but transitioned to a Division I independent schedule given the recently-named Metro Conference did not sponsor men's volleyball.
"We're excited to join the NEC and to once again have a conference home," said men's volleyball coach Hayden West-Mather, who is set to enter his second season with the Warriors. "The NEC is an excellent fit for Merrimack geographically and competitively, and we're grateful for the opportunity to become part of a conference that continues to grow and invest in men's volleyball."
West-Mather credited Merrimack athletic director Joe Foley and senior associate athletic director Shanna Alexander, as well as the leadership of the NEC, for the group's commitment, collaboration and belief in the future of the Warriors.
"Their support throughout this process has helped create an exciting opportunity for our student-athletes and the continued growth of Merrimack men's volleyball," West-Mather said.
During two seasons in the NEC (2023-24), the Warriors compiled a 8-18 record in conference play. However, during the last two seasons, the Warriors are 8-1 against teams rooted in the NEC.
"We're honored to join the NEC and grateful to the NEC Council of Presidents for welcoming Merrimack into the league," Foley said. "This is an exciting day for our men's volleyball program and our department. We're eager to build meaningful conference rivalries, compete for championships and provide our student-athletes with an outstanding experience at Merrimack College."
Merrimack becomes the seventh member of the conference in men's volleyball. The Warriors will compete against NEC core members FDU and LIU, as well as associate members Daemen, D'Youville, Manhattan and Maryland Eastern Shore.
"NEC men's volleyball continues to build on a strong foundation, and we are excited for the addition of Merrimack," NEC commissioner Noreen Morris said. "The Warriors have established a competitive program in a short period of time, and their return will strengthen an already competitive league. We're thrilled to continue the momentum the sport has generated across the Conference."
Merrimack field hockey also holds associate membership in the NEC.Â
