NORTH ANDOVER, MA — It was a successful week for the Merrimack College field hockey team as they were able to pick up win number one on the season, which came in conference play against Mercyhurst University. With the success came a couple Warriors who were named to this past week's NEC Prime Performer team.
Junior forward, Gianna Cioni the native of Washington, New Jersey was the spark on offense for Coach Hathaway's squad in the win against Mercyhurst, scoring both goals in the 2-1 victory.
Coach Hathaway had this to say about Gianna … "Gianna is a fierce competitor who rises to the moment. Her two goals against Mercyhurst showed her ability to make an impact when it matters most."
Senior back Darla Mahoney (Portsmouth, N.H.) has been the anchor on the defensive side all season long for the Warriors. This last week Mahoney was able to record three defensive saves, two from their matchup with SHU and one from a matchup earlier in the week with UVM. Mahoney leads the country with defensive saves, with 8.
Coach Hathaway had this to say about Darla ... "Darla brings incredible heart and grit every time she steps on the field. Her abilities as a defender and relentless fight continue to give our team confidence."
Up next for the Warriors is a trip to Lawrenceville, NJ on Friday where they'll square off with Rider University in more NEC play.
