BETHPAGE, N.Y. – The Merrimack College men's cross country team wrapped up the 2018 campaign on a stellar note with a top-eighth team finish at the 2018 NCAA East Regional Championship race, which was held at Bethpage State Park on Saturday morning. Senior captain John Sava left his mark on the program with an impressive performance in his final race, placing 33rd to lead the pack.

Location: Bethpage State Park / Bethpage, N.Y.

What They Said:
Head coach Chris Cameron: "Overall, we had a pretty good day. It's always difficult making the adjustment to 10K, especially with our freshmen who were running at that distance for the first time in their careers. Considering that, we were very pleased with the results and think there are some big things to come with this group."

How It Happened:
  • With Merrimack running on a more challenging 10K course for the second straight race, Sava paced the Warriors for the third time in 2018. He placed 33rd on the individual leader board with a final time of 34:04.10, averaging just under 5-1/2 minutes each mile.
  • Appropriately enough, Merrimack's other captain, junior Noah Davis, was the next best Warrior finisher, placing one spot back of Sava in 34:06.80 in 34th place while averaging a similar mile split.
  • Rookie TJ Corliss, an all-conference runner two weekends ago, was Merrimack's third-fastest runner on the men's side. The freshman put an end to his impressive rookie campaign by placing 44th with a final time of 34:31.00 with a 5:33 average mile time.
  • Rookie Joseph Forest was next in the group for Merrimack as the team's fourth-fastest performer on Saturday, placing 61st with a time of 35:08.20. He averaged 5:39/mile.
  • Sophomore Gunnar Hasselquist rounded out the top-five for the Warriors, and in doing so contributed to Merrimack's noteworthy showing at the regional race, by finishing one spot back of Forest in 62nd place. His final time read 35:13.10, averaging 5:40 per mile.
  • The Warriors wrap up a 2018 season that saw contribution from many first-year runners on a weekly basis. They posted their best Northeast-10 Conference Championship team finish in nearly a decade and return all but one of their top-five average runners next fall when they begin their first season as a Division I program competing in the Northeast Conference.
