Five Things To Know
- Tyler Irvine's breakout senior season has been one of the top stories of the year for the Warriors. The Michigan native enters the weekend on a four-game point streak, which is his third such streak in his collegiate career. His goal against the Dutchmen was his seventh of the year, which set a career high with half the season remaining. His 13 points lead the Warriors and is just five short of another career high.
- Merrimack's special teams units have been steadily on the rise in the past month. The Warriors' penalty kill unit has fought off 20 of the past 22 opponent power play opportunities to run at 90.9% in that stretch and help them jump 15 spots in the national ranks to 30th in the country. Their power play has also scored in four of the past seven games and is running at 23.1% (6/26) in that time.
- The Warriors' monstrous freshmen class of 16 has contributed heavily in the first half of the season, but Declan Carlile may have the biggest impact so far. The defenseman leads all rookies in scoring on the team with 11 points (2 g, 11 a) and has seven points in his first nine Hockey East games. He's also been near the top of the team in time on ice every game.
- Irvine and Logan Drevitch have proven to be lethal on the power play so far this season. Both of them have lit the lamp four times so far this year with the extra skater, which puts them in a tie for 15th in the country in the category and in a tie for fourth in the conference.
- After some struggles in non-conference play, the Bulldogs have come alive recently. Led by defenseman Scott Perunovich, (2 g, 19 a) Duluth has won six of their past eight games and enters the New Year in second in the NCHC standings with a 6-1-1 mark.
