Murphy, Merrimack Baseball Well-Represented On MAAC All-Conference Awards

NORTH ANDOVER, Mass. -- Merrimack College head baseball coach Brian Murphy was named Coach of the Year while four players were recognized by the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC), as announced by the conference Tuesday morning.

Matt DeShiro and Joey Frammartino were named First Team All-MAAC, Greg Cristino was recognized as a Second Team honoree and Garrett McGovern was named to the conference's All-Rookie Team.

The Warriors (26-27 overall, 20-10 in MAAC) finished with the fourth-best record in the conference and earned the No. 4 seed in the MAAC Baseball Championships, which start at Heritage Financial Park on Wednesday.

A sophomore second baseman, DeShiro concluded the regular season batting .322 (74-for-230) with 48 RBI and a team-high 60 runs scored. Of his team-best 74 hits, 26 of them went for extra bases with nine home runs.

Frammartino, a graduate student playing his first season for Merrimack, tallied a team-high .975 OPS with a .320 average (57-for-178). He ranked second on the team in both RBI (52) and runs scored (46).

Cristino, a senior first baseman, led the Warriors in both RBI (54) and home runs (13) behind a team-best .560 slugging percentage. Nearly half of his total hits (31-for-65) went for extra bases.

McGovern tallied a team-best .323 batting average (42-for-130) while playing 39 games with 30 starts. The freshman catcher drove in 24 runs and scored 20 times while his .815 OPS ranked fifth on the team.

It marks the second time Murphy has been named Coach of the Year at the Division I level, but the first time he's earned the honor during his Merrimack tenure. Murphy, who is coaching in his fourth season with the Warriors, previously was named the Coastal Athletic Conference (CAA) Coach of the Year in 2014 when he was at the helm of  during William & Mary. Under Murphy's guidance, the Warriors made the biggest jump in the league this season.
