BOSTON – The Merrimack women's cross country team earned a 13
th place finish at the 2018 New England Championships Saturday behind impressive performances from a variety of Warriors.
The Basics
Results: 13th/24
Top Finisher: Tia Foglietta (32nd – 19:00.79)
Location: Franklin Park / Boston, Mass.
What They Said:
Head coach
Chris Cameron: "The New England Championships are always a good barometer for where we stand against some of the best Division I, II and III programs region-wide that we might not normally get the chance to race against. I really liked our effort today knowing that we had some girls battling through sickness. I think we can build on this with championship season coming up."
How It Happened:
- Senior Tia Foglietta was the first runner to cross the finish line for the Warriors, finishing with a time of 19:00.79.
- Kate Fisher, a sophomore, was next to finish in 57th place overall with a respectable time of 19:21.26.
- Finishing third for the Merrimack roster was Sophie Gorton, who finished in 74th place overall. The senior clocked in at 19:34.20 to help the Warriors achieve their 13th place team finish.
- Crossing the line right after Gorton was Katherine Ferrara, a junior. Ferrara was the fourth fastest Warrior on the day, finishing with a time of 19:39.03.
- The next finishers for Merrimack were sophomore Julia Dempsey, senior Morgan DeBolt, and freshman Sarah Tierney who finished with times of 20:01.05, 20:35.52 and 20:38.80, respectively.
- Merrimack's 13th-place finish was particularly impressive knowing the field that it was running against. The Warriors finished better than Brown, Rhode Island, Maine, Fairfield, Hartford and Bryant – all Division I teams.
