NORTH ANDOVER, Mass. – After putting up 20 goals in a wire-to-wire season-opening victory, the top-ranked Merrimack College men's lacrosse team makes its longest road trip of the regular season when it travels to Ohio to take on Lake Erie College on Sunday (March 3). Game time is set for 1:30 p.m.
Five Things to Know:
- Merrimack picked up right where it left off from a historic 2018 season by throttling NYIT in its 2019 opener, as the Warriors piled on 20 goals en route to a seven-goal victory over the Bears to start the season off on a winning note. Merrimack led by six goals after the opening quarter and by nine goals at the half, building as large as a 10-goal lead en route to the eventual seven-marker victory in what was a rematch of last year's NCAA Tournament quarterfinal matchup.
- Merrimack owns the nation's longest active winning streak of 15 straight games and has won the last 31 games it has scored 10 or more goals in, a program record and the longest active win streak in the nation. Merrimack also has won 17 straight games at home, trailing only Colorado Mesa's 20 straight home wins. The last time the Warriors lost a game at home was on March 18, 2017.
- After finishing last year with the fifth-highest scoring offense in the country (15.37), the Warriors wasted little time finding their groove on attack in last week's opener, eventually settling for 20 goals. Last year's squad hit the 20-goal barrier on four occasions. Three different Warriors had seven-plus points – including a six-goal outing by junior Charlie Bertrand and a 4-4—8 scoring line by sophomore Sean Black, while freshman Max Morrill had seven points (4g, 3a) to claim the NE10 Rookie of the Week award for the first time in his career.
- Merrimack also saw sophomore Davis Cronin finish 15-of-21 on the X in an impressive season debut; he also set a new personal best with eight ground balls in last Saturday's victory. Defensively, four different Warriors finished the afternoon with two caused turnovers against NYIT.
- The Warriors will be looking to stay unbeaten in their brief all-time series against Lake Erie, as Sunday will mark the third such meeting between the schools. Last year, Merrimack earned a 16-11 victory at home, while back in 2013, the Warriors grinded out a one-goal victory on the road (11-10). The Storm, which went 11-3 in 2018, dropped their season opener at home against Rockhurst on Feb. 22 by a 20-12 score. Neil Gardner led the offense with six points (4g, 2a) and got the Storm to within three goals midway through the fourth quarter, but that was the closest they'd get, as Rockhurst had the final five goals in that game.
