NORTH ANDOVER, Mass. – Merrimack sophomore
Finn Dougherty scored the game-tying goal with 11 seconds left in regulation, but the visiting Marist Red Foxes secured the opening draw of overtime and turned it into a 10-9 verdict at Duane Stadium on Saturday afternoon.
The Warriors (1-7) forced overtime after they scored five goals in the fourth period, including the hat-trick tally from freshman
Jack Salva. Merrimack, which trailed 8-4 entering the final frame, capped the comeback with goals from
John Savino and Dougherty in the final 2:11 of regulation.
"I talked to the guys after the game just about how proud we were that they stuck with it, battled, continued to play with effort, toughness and discipline," Merrimack head coach Mike Sciamanna said. "That fourth quarter, they really played complementary lacrosse. We talked to the defense and said we couldn't give up another goal the rest of the game, and they didn't until overtime. And offense did what they did."
Colin Kruger and Dougherty each finished with two goals while Savino added one and
Rob Tyra chipped in two assists. Warrior freshman
Jesse D'Alonzo finished the game with 15 saves.
Merrimack returns to action at Mount St. Mary's next Saturday.
